Presented by the Victorian Government and City of Melbourne

Growing and supporting our retail industry is one of MSFW’s core functions, and the MSFW Domestic Buying Program is a collaborative educational and networking opportunity which is designed to achieve just this: empowering those in our regional fashion industry with a day-long program of panel discussions and presentations.

On Wednesday 5 September, a selection of local and regional retailers were invited to join members of the City of Melbourne Fashion and Retail Advisory Boards, to learn and share best practice advice, and to hear from a comprehensive mix of leading industry thinkers and strategists.

Supported by State Government, MSFW was connected with suitable retailers via regional area Councils, with those invited to attend needing to meet a set criteria – including stocking a minimum of 50% Australian-made product in their stores, and being an establised (more than three years) business.

The day’s program was facilitated by MSFW Advisory Board Chair, Glenys Shearer, and included presentations on the following topics: Digital Media for Small Businesses, presented by Alfonso Dominguez and Sara Filley, co-Founders of popuphood (Oakland, CA); Fashion Trends, presented by Lorna Hall, WGSN Senior Retail Editor and Facilitator of  MSFW Business Series; Visual Merchandising Trends, presented by Paul Bonnici, MSFW Advisory Board Member and Principal of Create2Communicate; and Melbourne Retailer Perspective, a panel discussion and group workshop presented by Michael Wittner of Wittner Shoes, Clea Garrick of Limedrop, and Christine Barro of Christine.

Attendees were taken on a personalised retail tour by MSFW Advisory Board Member, Fiona Sweetman, focusing on visual merchandising and innovation in experiential retail, and were also treated to a networking lunch at Grand Hyatt Melbourne’s Collins Kitchen. The day was finished in style, with attendees soaking up the atmosphere at MSFW Designer Series Runway 2, at Melbourne Town Hall.

The Domestic Buying Program concluded with an invitation to the Thursday morning MSFW Business Series seminar: Empowering Your People, which featured presentations from Marita Burke, Head of Marketing and Brands at Mecca Cosmetica, and Simone Pedersen, Founder of the Asia-Pacific region’s leading provider of online beauty-industry training, Red Scout.

With the 2012 program being a great success, we are looking forward to working with Victorian Regional Councils and the Victorian Government again in 2013, to develop another inspiring program for our next group of regional retailers. Stay tuned to MSFW for future details about our Domestic Buying Program!
